Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: What is the Cisco GLC-SX-MMD? A1: The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD is a Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver module designed to provide Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over multimode fiber optic cables. It operates at 1 Gbps and supports distances up to 550 meters on OM2 fiber, or up to 1km on OM3/OM4 fiber. The “MMD” signifies its Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM) capabilities.

Q2: What is the difference between GLC-SX-MM and GLC-SX-MMD? A2: The primary difference is the “D” which stands for Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM). The GLC-SX-MMD includes DDM functionality, allowing network administrators to monitor real-time operating parameters of the transceiver, such as temperature, optical power, and voltage. The GLC-SX-MM does not have this advanced monitoring capability.

Q3: What kind of fiber cable does the GLC-SX-MMD use? A3: The GLC-SX-MMD uses multimode fiber (MMF) optic cables. It is optimized for 50/125 µm and 62.5/125 µm fiber, performing best with laser-optimized OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber for extended distances.

Q4: What is the maximum distance the GLC-SX-MMD can transmit data? A4: The maximum transmission distance depends on the type of multimode fiber used:

  • Up to 550 meters (1804 ft) with standard 50/125 µm multimode fiber (OM2).
  • Up to 220 meters (722 ft) with 62.5/125 µm multimode fiber (FDDI-grade).
  • Up to 1000 meters (1km) with laser-optimized 50/125 µm multimode fiber (OM3/OM4).

Q5: Is the GLC-SX-MMD hot-swappable? A5: Yes, the Cisco GLC-SX-MMD is hot-swappable, allowing you to insert or remove it from a compatible switch or router port without powering down the device, minimizing network downtime.

Q6: Does this module require any special configuration? A6: Typically, no. As an industry-standard SFP, it’s designed for plug-and-play operation with compatible Cisco equipment. However, for specific network setups or advanced features, consulting your device’s documentation or a network specialist is recommended.
